As you know, after a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has just seen his Brexit agreement negotiated with the European Union passed by British Parliament on December 20, 2019. A final adoption of the text is expected by the government on January 9th, 2020. Once the Queen has given her assent, it will only remain for the European Parliament to ratify it.
If the European Parliament gives its go-ahead, the UK will formally leave the EU on Jan 31st, 2020 with a withdrawal agreement, and then move to a transition period which is expected to end on December 31st, 2020.
The priority will be to negotiate a trade agreement with the EU. While no trade agreement has been concluded and ratified before the end of the year, the UK faces the prospect of tariffs on exports to the EU.
For Canada, the transition period to December 31st, 2020, means that the current Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) will cover trade with Great Britain for another 12 months. After that, the future is uncertain…
