Canadian shippers’ ground transportation cost rose again in May

Results published by the Canadian General Freight Index (CGFI) indicate that the total cost of ground transportation for Canadian Shippers increased by 0.5% in May, as compared with April results.

The Base Rate Index, which excludes the impact of accessorial charges assessed by carriers, increased by 1.2% in May.

Average fuel surcharges assessed by carriers increased again this month. Fuel was 18.05% of Base Rates in May versus 17.98% in April.

“Total Freight Costs increased by another 0.5% in May,” said Doug Payne, President of CGFI sponsor Nulogx. “Fuel Surcharge is now over 18% of the Total Base Costs. Both Domestic LTL and TL actually declined marginally while Cross Border Truckload and LTL increased. All sectors continue to track well above last years level,” continued Payne.
