Canadian National Railway Co. laid off about 4,000 employees from its workforce this year as profits sagged 60 percent in the second quarter amid fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Roughly 3,000 of the 4,000 workers who were let go in 2020 are on furlough – meaning they can be recalled if business picks up – while some 1,000 others were permanently laid off, said CEO JJ Ruest.
“The good news is we’re starting to recall some people back to work,” Ruest said last week.
