On August 6, 2020, the United States announced the imposition of tariffs of 10% on imports of certain aluminum products from Canada, which took effect on August 16, 2020.
In direct response to these measures, Canada issued a Notice of intent countermeasures action against the United States in response to tariffs on Canadian aluminum products. These countermeasures will impose proportionate surtaxes against imports of aluminum and aluminum containing products listed in Table 1 of the Notice that are originating from the U.S. that are eligible to be marked as a good of the U.S. in accordance with the Determination of Country of Origin for the Purposes of Marking Goods (CUSMA Countries) Regulations.
These countermeasures are said to take effect on September 16 or 21, 2020 and will remain in place until the U.S. eliminates its tariffs against Canada.
Written comments for support or concerns can be submitted by email only to Department of Finance at email@example.com until September 6, 2020. Please include the term “Aluminum countermeasures” in the subject line of your submission.
