Hong Kong airport’s cargo volume declined by 1% to 362,000 tonnes in May

Hong Kong International Airport’s (HKIA) cargo traffic declined by 1% to 362,000 tonnes in May 2016., but the airport recorded a mild growth in passenger and flight movement during the same period. During the month, passenger traffic and flight movements increased by 1.4% to 5.8 million and 0.7% to 34,370 respectively, compared to the same month last year.

On the air cargo front, transshipments grew by 6% in May. However overall cargo volume fell, primarily due to a 4% year-on-year drop in imports and 2% decrease in exports. Traffic to / from key trading regions in North America registered the most significant drop during the month.

During the first five months of 2016, HKIA handled 29.4 million passengers and 170,960 flight movements, an increase of 5.0% and 2.5% respectively from the same period last year. Cargo traffic decreased by 2% to 1.7 million tonnes.
