Canada has requested World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute consultations with China concerning Chinese measures that impose additional import duties on certain agricultural and fishery products from Canada.<\/p>\n
These additional duties follow a Chinese investigation on the imposition by Canada of a 100 percent tariff on Chinese-made electric vehicles and a 25 percent tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum, both of which took effect in October 2024.<\/p>\n
Canada claims the Chinese measures are inconsistent with China’s obligations under various provisions of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994 and the Dispute Settlement Understanding.<\/p>\n
The request for consultations formally initiates a dispute in the WTO. Consultations give the parties an opportunity to discuss the matter and to find a satisfactory solution without proceeding further with litigation. After 60 days, if consultations have failed to resolve the dispute, the complainant may request adjudication by a panel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
