President Donald Trump said he expects the U.S. and Canada can \u201cget there\u201d on a resolution to their dispute over sectoral tariffs on steel, aluminum and autos.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trump made the remarks in a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on October 7, where the president described the disagreements between the countries\u00a0as \u201cnatural conflicts\u201d because they\u2019re competing for the same business.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wants to make cars, we want to make cars, and we\u2019re in competition. And the advantage we have is we have this massive market,\u201d Trump said as he sat next to Carney.<\/p>\n

Carney told Trump that Canada is the U.S.\u2019s largest foreign investor, and suggested the pace of investment may accelerate \u2013 \u201cprobably $1 trillion in the next five years, if we get the agreement we expect to get.\u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are areas where we compete, and it\u2019s in those areas where we have to come to an agreement that works,\u201d Carney said. \u201cBut there are more areas where we are stronger together, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re focused on.\u201d<\/p>\n
