And more importantly, how can it be avoided?<\/b><\/p><\/div><p>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ff8d243 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ff8d243\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">End of Transitional Measures<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f1b4cb3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f1b4cb3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div><p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">To facilitate the transition to CARM, the CBSA had suspended interest and penalties between\u00a0<b>October 2024 and January 30, 2026<\/b>.<\/span><\/p><\/div><div><p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Since January 31, 2026:<\/p><\/div><div><ul type=\"disc\"><li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Interest is calculated\u00a0<b>on a monthly basis<\/b><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div><ul type=\"disc\"><li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Outstanding balances may be subject to\u00a0<b>penalties<\/b><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div><ul type=\"disc\"><li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Interest now appears on\u00a0<b>Statements of Account (SOA)<br \/><br \/><\/b><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-36f80ea elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"36f80ea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">\nKey concept to understand<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-045b10b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"045b10b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div><p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Under CARM:<\/span><\/p><\/div><div><ul type=\"disc\"><li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">All amounts associated with a given\u00a0<b>RM (Business Number)<\/b>\u00a0are consolidated into a\u00a0<b>single account<\/b>, regardless of the customs broker<\/li><\/ul><\/div><div><ul type=\"disc\"><li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Payments are applied to the\u00a0<b>oldest outstanding balances first<\/b><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div><p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>In practical terms:<\/b><\/p><\/div><div><p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Even if you pay a recent transaction, the payment may be applied to an\u00a0<b>older unpaid balance<\/b>. As a result, the recent transaction may appear as\u00a0<b>outstanding<\/b>\u00a0and generate\u00a0<b>interest charges<\/b>.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-505ad04 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"505ad04\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why this creates confusion<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19b3336 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"19b3336\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div><p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">This mechanism is not new. However, under CARM, all transactions under a single RM are now:<\/span><\/p><\/div><div><ul type=\"disc\"><li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">consolidated into a\u00a0<b>single account, across all brokers<\/b><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div><ul type=\"disc\"><li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">and payments are applied to the\u00a0<b><b>overall account balance, not to specific transactions<\/b><\/b><p>\u00a0<\/p><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div><p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">With the return of interest, this now results in\u00a0<b>actual charges being applied \u2014 sometimes unexpectedly<\/b>.<br \/><br \/><\/p><p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">As a result:<\/span><\/b><\/p><ul type=\"disc\"><li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Some transactions may appear overdue<\/li><li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Interest may be charged, even if payments were made<br \/><br \/><\/li><\/ul><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div
