Union dockworkers at U.S. West Coast shipping ports failed to reach a labour agreement with cargo carriers and terminal operators on Friday, but both sides committed that \u201cnormal operations will continue at the ports,\u201d according to a joint statement.<\/p>\n

The International Longshore & Warehouse Union\u2019s existing contract with the Pacific Maritime Association, which covers more than 22,000 workers at 29 ports,\u00a0expired at 5 p.m. The two groups pledged that \u201ccargo will keep moving\u201d until an agreement is reached.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth sides understand the strategic importance of the ports to the local, regional and U.S. economies, and are mindful of the need to finalize a new coast-wide contract as soon as possible to ensure continuing confidence in the West Coast,\u201d according to the statement.<\/p>\n
