However, the rise in the value of trade was not reflected in the number of traders. The number of exporting enterprises (+0.7%) edged up to reach\u00a048,036\u00a0in\u00a02022, while the number of importing enterprises remained stable at\u00a0160,238.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Most of the growth in merchandise trade value in\u00a02022\u00a0was attributed to medium- and large-sized enterprises, defined as those with\u00a0100\u00a0or more employees. The number of these exporting and importing enterprises went up by\u00a05.9% and\u00a07.2%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Small enterprises, which comprised the lion&#8217;s share (94.6%) of all traders in\u00a02022, did not experience a similar rise in the number of traders year over year. The number of exporters to the Russian Federation (<span class=\"nowrap\">-5<\/span>58) and Ukraine (<span class=\"nowrap\">-1<\/span>43) declined, against the backdrop of the conflict between the two countries. The number of enterprises importing goods from the United States (<span class=\"nowrap\">-8<\/span>0) edged down in\u00a02022, while those importing goods from Asia (+1,198) showed an increase, led by Vietnam and India. By value, related party transactions had an outsized impact on Canada&#8217;s international merchandise trade, totalling $611.4\u00a0billion in\u00a02022\u00a0and representing significant shares of the value of both exports (45.1%) and imports (41.4%).<\/p>\n<p>Related party trade varied between regions. In\u00a02022, a smaller share of exporters to the United States traded with a related party (21.7%) than did exporters to non-<a class=\"acro01-tooltip tooltipstered\">US<\/a>\u00a0destinations (31.3%). However, by value, more than half of all goods exports to the United States were sold to a related party, as opposed to less than a quarter of non-<a class=\"acro02-tooltip tooltipstered\">US<\/a>\u00a0exports.<\/p>\n<p>Among non-<a class=\"acro03-tooltip tooltipstered\">US<\/a>\u00a0countries, the related party share of export value varied depending on the country of destination and industry involved. More than two-thirds of the value of exports to the United Kingdom was between related parties, primarily tied to primary metal manufacturing.
