The union representing the checkers at the Port of Montreal, Local 1657 of the International Longshoremen’s Association, and the Maritime Employers Association have a new collective
agreement.
The agreement was ratified by a vote of over 80% at a union meeting on February 18.
Both parties acknowledge the worrying decline in volumes at the port, namely a 24% cumulative drop in containers alone since January 2022, in favour of other ports. The current economic slowdown adds to these challenges.
The parties hope that this news will prompt the longshoremen’s union to resume negotiations very soon. The consequences stemming from the lack of progress since last September may only worsen an already critical situation for the population served by the port.
