August Air Cargo Demand Holds Steady Amid Slowdown Signs

Global air cargo demand remained resilient in August, with cargo tonne-kilometers (CTK) rising 4.1% year-on-year, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). While slightly below July’s 5% growth, August was the sixth consecutive month of year-on-year growth, IATA’s August global air cargo market report revealed.

IATA Director General Willie Walsh noted that the change in global trade patterns has been positive for air cargo. “Air cargo has benefitted from a shift from sea for some high value goods as shippers try to minimize the risk of tariff changes,” he said. Walsh continued, adding that some volume has been diverted away from North America, following changes to the de minimis rule, which has slowed the flow of low-value goods from China. Subsequently, it has in turn fueled stronger growth for the Europe–Asia, Within Asia, Africa–Asia, and Middle East–Asia trade lanes.

A recent report by The Loadstar indicated that e-commerce flows into Europe are expected to gain momentum. According to IATA’s August data, air cargo demand for Europe–Asia saw double-digit year-on-year growth of 13%.

The European Commission reported that 91% of low-value e-commerce shipments (items valued under €150) to the EU in 2024 originated from China. To support customs operations, enforce product safety, and promote fair competition, the Commission has proposed a €2 handling fee on each shipment entering the EU. If implemented, the measure could introduce new uncertainties to global air cargo flows.
