Canada and Mercosur are set to re-launch free trade agreement negotiations

Canada and Mercosur are set to re-launch free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations. The Mercosur regional trade bloc includes Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay. Canada and Mercosur members started negotiations in 2018 but things have been on hold since 2020.

Brazil, which holds Mercosur’s rotating presidency, announced that chief negotiators from Canada and the bloc will meet in October to relaunch the stalled talks.

The two sides issued a joint statement indicating that “the resumption of trade negotiations between Canada and Mercosur sends a clear signal of our shared commitment to deepening our mutually beneficial economic ties and unlocking meaningful opportunities for our businesses, workers, and communities on both sides.”
