U.S. Customs officially establishes Gordie Howe International Bridge as a port of entry

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced in a Fedreral Register Notice that it is officially establishing the Gordie Howe International Bridge (GHIB) border crossing as a port of entry (part of the port of Detroit) for customs purposes and as a Class A port of entry for immigration purposes.

CBP ports of entry are locations where CBP officers and employees are assigned to accept entries of merchandise, clear passengers, collect duties, and enforce the various provisions of customs, immigration, agriculture, and related U.S. laws at the border.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge border crossing is situated entirely within the corporate limits of the city of Detroit, Michigan, which is included in the port limits of Detroit. Therefore, the Gordie Howe International Bridge border crossing will operate as a part of the port of entry of Detroit.

The new construction includes a U.S. and Canadian Customs Plaza with associated roadway development. The bridge and crossing will be located 2 miles west of Ambassador Bridge and 4 miles from the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. GHIB will be an innovative crossing as it will have a highway-to-highway connection. This seamless connection benefits the international trade industry and the public.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is actively preparing for the bridge’s opening with staff already occupying the Canadian port of entry, installing advanced detection technology, and finalizing operational readiness.
