Yang Ming Marine Transport is expanding its fleet with three new 8,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel-ready containerships. These vessels, to be built by Japan’s Nihon Shipyard, are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2030. The deal is valued between $351 million and $394 million, as disclosed in a recent stock exchange filing.
Yang Ming is continuing to renew its fleet by replacing aging mid-sized vessels—specifically those in the 5,500 to 6,500 TEU range that are over 20 years old. This latest order follows a previous purchase in March of three methanol-ready ships with a capacity of 8,000 TEU.
In parallel, Yang Ming has also made major investments in LNG dual-fuel ships. Earlier this month, the company signed a contract with Hanwha Ocean in South Korea to build seven 15,500 TEU LNG-ready ships, worth up to $1.53 billion, with delivery scheduled in 2028–2029. Another five LNG vessels from Hyundai Heavy Industries are already in progress for 2026 delivery.
Yang Ming said these investment will help stabilize its mid- to long-term fleet strategy while strengthening its service capacity. Currently, Yang Ming is the world’s 10th largest container line, with a fleet of around 100 vessels.
