WTO report shows trade-facilitating trend continues, but export restrictions persist
According to the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) latest Trade Monitoring Report, between mid-October 2022 and mid-October 2023, the value of world merchandise trade covered by new trade-facilitating measures far exceeded that affected by new trade restrictive measures, an encouraging trend at a time of uncertainty and tension in the global economy.

Blanket certificates of origin, whether for CUSMA or for other free trade agreements, are usually set to begin on January 1 and to expire, twelve months later, on December 31.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) initiated a re investigation to update the normal values and export prices of certain carbon steel fasteners originating in or exported from China and Chinese Taipei, and the amounts of subsidy of certain carbon steel fasteners originating in or exported from China.
U.S. trade commission renews finding that Canadian lumber imports injure U.S. industry
The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) announced that it determined that revoking the existing antidumping and countervailing duty orders on certain softwood lumber products from Canada would be likely to lead to continuation or recurrence of material injury to U.S. industry within a reasonably foreseeable time.
Canada’s merchandise trade surplus reached $3.0 billion in October
Statistics Canada announced that the country’s merchandise imports fell 2.8% in October, while exports edged up 0.1%.

Canadian railways’ freight volume was down slightly in September
Statistics Canada reports that Canadian railways transported 30.7 million tonnes of freight in September, down slightly (-1.9%) from September 2022.
