Canada will implement a federal plastic registry with mandatory yearly reporting

The Government of Canada recently announced the implementation of a Federal Plastic Registry to monitor the types and volumes of plastic products in order to track plastic from the time it is produced up to its end of life.

The Registry requires plastic resin manufacturers, producers of plastic products, and service providers to report each year on the quantity and types of plastic they put on the Canadian market and how that plastic moves through the economy.

Some importers will be affected by the registry. Schedule 3 and Schedule 4 of the Government’s Notice (link below) provide useful definitions.

The initial reporting notice applies to the calendar years 2024, 2025, and 2026. Information pertaining to the 2024 calendar year will have to be provided no later than September 29, 2025. Information pertaining to the 2025 calendar year shall be provided no later than September 29, 2026. Information pertaining to the 2026 calendar year shall be provided no later than September 29, 2027.
