Port of New York and New Jersey container volume was up 4.0% in January

The Port of New York and New Jersey began the new year with notable increases in total volume, exports, autos, and rail activity. Total volume in January 2026 was 749,906 TEUs (411,584 containers), up 4.0 percent from the 720,747 TEUs (399,501 containers) recorded in January 2025.

Exports increased 13.9 percent in January compared to January 2025, totaling 112,426 TEUs (59,858 containers) in January 2026, compared to 98,706 TEUs (52,704 containers) in January 2025. Export empties totaled 262,114 TEUs in January 2026, up from 241,751 TEUs in January 2025, an 8.4 percent increase.

Imports fell marginally by 1.5 percent in January 2026 compared to the previous year, totaling 372,973 TEUs (205,825 containers) compared to 378,632 TEUs (210,276 containers) in January 2025. Import empties rose by 44.3 percent From January 2025 to January 2026

A total of 58,522 containers moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey by rail in January 2026. This number represents an 11.5 percent increase from the January 2025 figure of 58,522 containers.

Autos saw a significant jump in volume from the previous year. A total of 30,758 autos moved through the port in January; an increase of 30.2 percent compared to January 2025.
