Canadian railway's carload traffic was down 1.4 percent in first week of May
According to the Association of American Railroads (AAR), Canadian railways reported 92,948 carloads for the week ending May 9, 2026, down 1.4 percent, and 74,677 intermodal units, down 6.4 percent compared with the same week in 2025.
For the first 18 weeks of 2026, Canadian railways reported cumulative rail traffic volume of 2,940,777 carloads, containers and trailers, up 0.2 percent.
North American rail volume for the week ending May 9, 2026, on 9 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railways totaled 336,095 carloads, up 2.0 percent compared with the same week last year, and 371,416 intermodal units, up 2.3 percent compared with last year.
Total combined weekly rail traffic in North America was 707,511 carloads and intermodal units, up 2.1 percent. North American rail volume for the first 18 weeks of 2026 was 12,468,690 carloads and intermodal units, up 2.0 percent compared with 2025.
