Port of New York and New Jersey container volume dropped 8.4% in April
After a volume surge that drove the Port of New York and New Jersey to claim the top spot as the nation's busiest cargo gateway in March, The port's volume numbers resumed a steady pace in April.
Total volume was 688,163 TEUs (377,105 containers), down 8.4% from 751,194 TEUs in April 2025. This number brings the year-to-date total through April to 2,865,857 TEUs .
Import loads for April totaled 340,365 TEUs, down 12% from 386,727 TEUs (214,054 containers) in April 2025. From January through April, the Port of New York and New Jersey import loads reached 1,439,610 TEUs (791,252 containers), a 4.3% decrease from the 1,504,068 TEUs imported in the same period of 2025.
Exports loads decreased slightly by .4% in April totaling 121,258 TEUs versus 121,770 TEUs in April 2025. For the first four months of 2026, the Port of New York and New Jersey export loads reached 475,438 TEUs, a 2.7% increase compared to the 462,777 TEUs exported in the same period of 2025.
Rail volume decreased 8.5% in April 2026 from the April 2025 figure, totaling 54,538 containers. Rail volume, January through April, was 2.4% greater than in the same period of 2025.
A total of 28,013 autos moved through the Port of New York and New Jersey in April, a 7.0% decrease from April 2025. Auto volume for January through April was 8.2% less than in the same period of 2025.
