American freight transportation index was down 1.3% in May

The Freight Transportation Services Index (TSI), fell 1.3% in May from April, falling for the second consecutive month, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

From May 2025 to May 2026 the index fell 0.3%. The Freight TSI measures the amount of freight carried by the for-hire transportation industry.

The Freight TSI decreased in May due to decreases in pipeline, trucking, and water while air freight, rail carloads, and rail intermodal volumes increased.

The TSI measures the month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries.
