U.S. President Donald President Trump issued a Presidential Proclamation on Monday imposing 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the United States.
The new tariffs are set to take effect on March 12, 2025.
This is a reinstatement of duties imposed in 2018 by the Trump Administration. Progressively, through negotiations and tariff retaliations, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, the European Union, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom had received certain exemptions.
The new Proclamation will nullify the exemptions and apply tariffs on imports from every country. In 2018 the duty on steel was sets at 25% and will remain the same this time. The tariff on aluminum and derivatives had been set at 10% in 2018 but will now be raised to 25%.
