On June 3, 2026, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue, announced that the government will extend key steel and aluminum tariff measures for one year. Pending Governor in Council approval, Canada will extend the steel tariff rate quota (TRQ) system for imports from non-CUSMA countries until June 27, 2027, as well as existing tariff relief for eligible US steel and aluminum products and for steel products subject to derivative tariffs, until June 30, 2027.
TRQ volumes will remain set at 20% of 2024 import levels for countries without a free trade agreement with Canada, and 75% for those with one. Imports above quota will continue to face a 50% tariff. The United States and Mexico remain exempt under CUSMA.
Alongside these extensions, the government will consult Canadian producers to ensure remission processes continue to support a competitive domestic steel market. Following Governor in Council approval, Global Affairs Canada will publish a new Notice to Importers with further administrative guidance.
