Canada Expands U.S. Surtax Remission Measures

The Government of Canada has announced amendments to the United States Surtax Remission Order (2025) to expand surtax relief available on certain goods imported from the United States.

Key amendments include:

  • extending several remission measures until July 1, 2027;
  • introducing a new Schedule 6, granting remission for goods classified under the tariff classification numbers listed in that Schedule;
  • adding and updating numerous products across the existing schedules following the Department of Finance’s review of additional remission requests.

These amendments broaden the scope of the remission program and, for goods listed in Schedules 1, 2, 5 and 6, as well as section 4.3, confirm broad remission available to all importers with no import deadline.

We encourage you to :

  • review whether your products are now eligible for remission;
  • pay particular attention to Schedule 6, where eligibility is based on the tariff classification number;
  • assess whether previously paid surtaxes on your imports may qualify for remission or refund under applicable CBSA procedures.

Additional Resource

The official Order Amending the United States Surtax Remission Order (2025), including the complete list of newly eligible tariff classifications for remission, is available in the Canada Gazette, Part II.
