Due to the extreme cold from the Prairie operating region (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba) to Northern Ontario, CP’s winter operating plan and train length restrictions have been enacted. In addition, the temperature on the next several days, particularly in the Chicago and St. Paul area, is expected to be unseasonably cold.
As of Monday at 10:00 pm ET, when CP sent this advisory, there were no service disruptions to report. However, CP encouraged customers to build additional time into their plans, as the cold weather is expected to continue through the week.
Certain winter weather conditions require adjustments to CP operations to ensure safety, network resilience, system velocity and capacity. Customers also play a major role in preparing for challenging winter conditions by keeping all walking and parking areas free of snow and ice. Additionally, all intermodal equipment must be free from snow and ice buildup, including container roofs.
CP has a comprehensive and robust winter contingency plan in place that prepares it to handle harsh winter operating conditions. For detailed information on CP’s 2022- 2023 Winter Contingency Plan, read the report here.
