BYD’s 9,200-CEU dual-fuel car carrier, the BYD Shenzhen, has joined the company’s fleet as its fourth car carrier.
Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD has taken delivery of what is claimed to be the world’s largest dual-fuel car carrier, built by Chinese shipbuilder China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Nanjing). The vessel was handed over in a naming ceremony held on Monday in Yizheng, Jiangsu province.
The vessel, named BYD Shenzhen, can carry up to 9,200 vehicles and is the first of its kind to be built for BYD Co Ltd. Officials from local government, BYD, and China Merchants Group attended the naming and delivery ceremony.
The 219.9-metre-long vessel features a dual-fuel propulsion system capable of running on both LNG and conventional marine fuel. Designed with 16 decks and a top speed of 19 knots, the ship also incorporates a hybrid battery system, shaft generator, high-voltage shore power connection, and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to meet the International Maritime Organisation’s emission reduction standards. BYD has three more vessels of the same size on order at China Merchants Industry, which are set for delivery this year.
