Major changes to the Harmonized System for January 1st, 2022

Did you know?

The World Customs Organization (WCO) has published changes to the Harmonized System (HS) Nomenclature that will come into force on January 1, 2022. The HS is updated every five years to take into account, among other things, new technologies and changing business models.

Canada participated in the development of these changes and must now adopt them in its Customs Tariff effective January 1st, 2022.

  1. What are the changes to HS 2022?

The Harmonized System 2022 includes 351 sets of modifications to be implemented in all participating countries around the world and these amendments are distributed as follows:

  1. As an importer, how can I prepare for these changes internationally (6 digits):

Request a quote from Axxess to verify and make the preliminary update of our database.

With your agreement, Axxess will identify the affected products, ask you the necessary questions and perform a preliminary update of your import profile.

 

  1. Then how to prepare for the changes at the national level (7th / 8th and 9th / 10th digits):

Upon receipt of the correlation tables from the Department of Finance Canada and Statistics Canada, Axxess will provide you with an estimate of the time required with the costs to be able to complete the update of your database.

With your agreement, Axxess will identify the affected products, ask you the necessary questions and proceed with the final update of your import profile.

 

  1. Will these changes have a financial impact on my imports:

These changes usually do not involve any change in government tariff policy and there is no impact on duty rates.
